Broken tooth repair

Broken Tooth Repair in Chevy Chase, MD

A broken tooth is not one problem. It could need smoothing, bonding, a crown, root canal treatment, extraction, or implant planning. The first step is figuring out how deep the fracture goes.

What patients usually need to know first

Dr. Jay Siddiqui evaluates broken teeth with the final restoration in mind. Radiant Dental Care uses digital imaging, intraoral scanning, and in-house milling so selected broken teeth can be restored efficiently when the tooth is still restorable.

Common broken tooth situations

Some broken teeth are cosmetic chips. Others expose dentin, irritate the nerve, or split below the gum. The treatment depends on tooth structure, symptoms, bite forces, and fracture depth.

  • Small chip or sharp edge
  • Large broken filling or cusp fracture
  • Cracked tooth with bite pain
  • Broken crown or veneer
  • Tooth broken near or below the gum line

When a same-day crown may work

If the tooth has enough healthy structure and the bite is manageable, Radiant may be able to scan, design, mill, and bond a crown in one visit. Front-tooth esthetics or complex cases may still need a lab-made restoration.

When the tooth may not be saveable

A vertical root fracture, deep split, severe infection, or fracture below the bone can make extraction the more predictable option. In those cases, Dr. Siddiqui can discuss grafting and implant replacement options.

What not to do

Do not keep chewing on the broken tooth. Save any crown or fragment if it came out. Avoid placing aspirin directly on gums or teeth because it can burn tissue.

Common questions

Not always, but it should be evaluated promptly, especially if there is pain, swelling, bleeding, sharp edges, or a broken restoration.
Sometimes. Same-day repair depends on how much tooth remains, whether the nerve is involved, and whether the bite and esthetics are suitable.
Only if the nerve is infected, exposed, or irreversibly inflamed. Some broken teeth only need a crown or bonding; others need root canal treatment or extraction.
